The International Accord on Regulating the Global Economy

Global finance and trade is currently held in sway by neoliberal practices. The behavior of global financial institutions and multinational organizations typically require nations to undergo state minimalism and privatization of common resources. Structural adjustment programs and trans-national corporations are depredating to the sovereignty of citizens in many developing nations across the globe.

There currently exists no alternative formed by the 'developing world' to stand up to the WTO, World Bank, IMF, etc. Why not? The ILO and regional economic blocks are the best mechanisms at present that nation states can use to protect the interests of their citizens. There is, however, no accord by which the world's poorest and often most abused nations can agree to and thus legally uphold a set of basic labor requirements. If all nations of the world which have the legal ability to offer cheap labor to the global economy signed such an accord, it would mean the wholesale legal elimination of such abusive practices. The global economy would then be forced to pay better wages and provide better working conditions for the citizens of the world's poorest countries as no country would be left available for them to flock to. It is simply about equalizing profit sharing. A greatly disproportionate amount goes to wealthy individuals and share-holders, typically far removed and without any interests in the nations where the products earning their profits are made, it is time to stand up against the tyranny of profit.

Higher wages thus guarantees the greater availability of funds in your country leading to a national commerce boom and overall development. As the poor gain a better foothold in life, the daily stresses which so often erupt in violence can be minimized and a more peaceful and harmonious society can emerge.

The conventional neoliberal/capitalist arguments of the day - which are often made by trans-national corporations - include notions of bringing relief and economic growth in countries of extreme poverty (trickle down effect, etc.). It is true that due to the social conditions found in many poorer countries most citizens can only offer extremely cheap labor but it still should not provide the right for corporations or other to use them in order to fabricate their products on what MEDP considers to be outrageously low pay. It does not make ethical sense that a shirt selling for $50.00 US only cost 6 cents to fabricate, or a jacket selling for $120.00 US costs 15c to make. People in developing countries have rights, have sovereignty, and must have their will respected rather than created for them. The privatization of basic commodities in any country should have the approval of citizens as should the behavior of corporations or other business operating in their society. This is not done today in far too many countries. The injustice and abuse of people working for pennies must no longer be tolerated.

The International Accord on Regulating the Global Economy (IARGE) seeks to protect the sovereignty, welfare, and rights of citizens in poor countries. If all the poor countries in the world united and demanded their rights in a democratic and transparent manner to the global economy, transnational corporations will no longer have the legal ability to predate on the world's poor. Working for 10 cents an hour is tantamount to slavery. The forced privatization of publicly owned enterprises by financial institutions is totalitarianism and a complete disregard for the sovereignty of a nation's people. In a world full of democracies, the abuses by corporations, financial institutions, and multinational organizations is simply unethical. It is time to stand for the rights of citizens who cannot afford to stand for them.

MEDP stands on behalf of over 5 billion people, will you stand with us?

IARGE will seek international agreement on:

- Minimum wages

- End to child labor

- Rights of Laborers

- Environmental responsibilities of corporations

- Social responsibilities of corporations

- Laws protecting the sovereignty of the people from the "tyranny of money."

This will produce an overall shift in the operation of global economy and raise the living standards of the poorest nations of the world by a great amount. Manufacturing products for 10c and hour will become illegal, working people under 'harsh' conditions will be illegal, and the privatization of public businesses without the explicit consent of the people will be illegal. There will be no where left in the world for corporations to seek abusive labor rates and subversive methods by corporations to gain such rates can be reported by whistle blowers as they will be legal violations. Increase the well-being of your citizens, that - in MEDP's opinion - is the role of government.
